Model Airplane News July, 1969 Model Airplane News Cover for July, 1969 Soaring Glider Eclipse Click to Enlarge Here is what the blurb about the cover has to say: "... Cheryl Starr, Joe Matous' daughter and Jim's niece poses with their fine and very large soaring gliders better known as the "Eclipse". The launch site is at the base of Milpitas Slope near San Francisco ..." About the Model The majestic flight of a large soaring glider has to be seen to be appreciated. The model was named "Eclipse" because it was so big that one observer thought that it would blot out the sun) The model is designed as a "thermal seeker", and as such must move quickly to fly from one area of rising air to another. The model has a 13 foot wingspan, broken down into two 75" panels that can be easily fit into a Volkswagen. Radio control linkage to ailerons is used to guide the model to thermal currents. The model is made of balsa covered with fiberglass for durability. You may read about the model and look at the plans by clicking on the photos below to enlarge them. Soaring Glider Eclipse P.S.
