Every Tuesday, there is DJ Swing at the Josephine Butler Parks Center, 2437 Fifteenth Street, NW Washington, DC 20009 (That's on on 15th Street in Downtown DC.) This nicely restored house is between Florida Avenue and Columbia Road right opposite Meridian Hill Park (also known as "Malcolm X Park") We're really glad to see Lindy Hop in the City.

The Star Spangled Big Band will perform popular music of the 1930s and '40s at Cafe 611 on Thursday, August 21 from 7:30 to 10:30PM. The Cafe is located at 611 Market Street in Frederick, MD. They have a wood dance floor that is pretty good

Tom and Debra have Thursday night classes at CityDance Center at Strathmore BUT- There will be a DJ dance from 9:10:15 for some quick practice on a Thursday night. Beginner class 7-8pm Intermediate class 8-9pm Open DJ dance 9-10:15pm, $5 if you池e not in the class

The Avalon Studio holds a "practice dance" from 8:30 - 10:30 with DJ Music; Admission is free to all students currently enrolled in an Avalon class, and it's $5 for anyone else.

Swing Dancing on Friday August 22, 2008

Tom and Debra will have dancing at Chevy Chase Ballroom. The Big Four Combo will play Dancing from 9-12 pm, $15, and a great wood floor. CCB dancing is at 5207 Wisconsin Avenue NW in DC. This is at the corner of Wisconsin and Harrison, just south of Friendship Circle. Very metro convenient, large parking lot in back. Plenty of places to eat: Cheesecake Factory, Clydes, Maggianos, Booeymongers. An elegant civilized neighborhood

SWING DANCES in the Red Fox Room of the WASHINGTON DULLES HILTON 13869 Park Center Road (Route 28 near the airport) The Wildman Band will play. Gary and Sue lead the fun with a beginner lesson from 8:30-9pm, dance 9pm-12midnight to great live music, only $15! All ages welcome, and as always, you never need to bring a partner.

Swing Dancing on Saturday August 23, 2008

The Tom Cunningham Orchestra will bring glorious Big Band music to the Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo. Make sure your dancing shoes are in good shape, TCO will celebrate William "Count" Basie's 104th birthday at Glen Echo's Spanish Ballroom, playing nothing but the greatest dance music of the Count Basie Orchestra the entire night. Basie's career spanned 5 decades, from the 1930's until his death in 1984. The Tom, Robin and the gang will play the cream of the crop of the Count's library on this fantastic night that you won't want to miss.

  • When asked "Who was your favorite band to dance to?" Frankie Manning answers without hesitation, "Count Basie."
  • In the book "The Swing Era," Gunther Schuller entitled the chapter dedicated to the Count Basie Orchestra "the Quintessence of Swing."

Now you'll have the chance to hear for yourself why Frankie Manning said, after a night of dancing to the Tom Cunningham Orchestra, "That's the best Basie since Basie!" The doors will open at 7, a beginners swing dance lesson will start at 8, and the band will start wailin' at 9 until midnight. Admission is $15 for adults, and $8 for kids 13 and under.     MONDAY NIGHTS SWING IN CANTON -- that is, Canton the historic Baltimore neighborhood near Fells Point -- every Monday, Sommer and Dorry will be hosting a swing party at the Austin Grill 2400 Boston Street, Baltimore, 410-534-0606. They will have beginner lessons from 8-9 and open dancing from 9-11. $5 for dancing (free for students), $10 for dancing and lessons ($5 for students).
