The Waco "F" series of biplanes were one of the most popular aircraft of the 1930's. This ultra-practical sports biplane was built at the Waco Aircraft Factory in Troy, Ohio.

The RNF was the first of the WACO "F" (tandem seating) series and was introduced in 1930. The open-cockpit three-place Waco RNF blended power, performance, and price. Called “the easiest flying airplane in America”, the RNF was popular because of its practical payload, ample passenger room and comfort. It was able to land and stop within 100 feet, which made it popular among recreational fliers (and farmers) using short fields. It attracted general aviation enthusiasts, barnstormers, and sportsman pilots. Approximately 150 RNFs were built between 1930 and 1931. Over forty are still registered.

The letters are key to various design features. Using the Waco designation system, "RNF" indicated a "Scarab" engine (R), open cockpit (N), tandem seating (F) aircraft.
