July, 1949 marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of Model Airplane News which was duly celebrated by a highly symbolic cover painting showing progress from a boy with a Wright-type hand glider to a jet powered flying wing. (In view of the B-2, Kotula was just alittle on the prophestic side).

There were some fancy words as well:

  • "In presenting MODEL AIRPLANE NEWS to the reading public, it is fitting thatwe dedicate its pages to America's greatest investment and finest possession -- our boys and girls" -- Editor's Message, July 1929
  • "The ensuing twenty years have seen a 'pastime' for boys and girls grow into an organized scientific sport that boasts two million devotees of all ages [rubber powered models]\ have given way to 150 mph control line planes and MODEL AIRPLANE NEWS has become the first and foremost magazine devoted exclusively to model aviation - Editorial message, July 1949

By and large, in its 20th year, Model Airplane News was a forum for a large group of individual modelers. As we have seen in previous issues, most of the vendors (such as K&B Engines) were operating out of a garage and most people seemed eager to share knowledge. hampionship planes were turned into inexpensive kits so that every kid on the block could be flying the 1949 Wakefield winner (if he wanted to). Model airplanes were a very accessible hobby that kids and adults could take as much or as little as they wanted. Best of all, each month featured a cover painting by Jo Kotula.
