Model Airplane News June, 1939 Hamburger Flugzeugbau Ha 137 Model Airplane News Cover Art for June, 1939 by Jo Kotula Click to Enlarge The Hamburger Flugzeugbau ("Hamburg Aircraft Factory") design team initiated work on a dive-bomber late in 1933. Three prototypes were completed during 1934-35, and tests began during the summer of 1935. The first prototype was damaged in October, 1935, but by this time it was obvious that the rather radial engine was unsuited for a single-seat dive-bomber due to the severely restricted forward view that it offered. The prototypes were re-designed to use an in;line, water-cooled engine. The modified Ha 137 participated in a dive-bomber contest in June, 1936, but the aircraft was obviously inferior to the Junkers Ju 87 "Stuka, and no production orders were placed.
