Model Airplane News June, 1937 Hanriot H.220 Model Airplane News Cover Art for June, 1937 by Jo Kotula Click to Enlarge The Hanriot H.220, a striking all-metal twin-engined three-seat fighter, was the star of the Salon de l'Aeronautique held in Paris in November 1936. It had a large number of advanced design features, but the most striking aspect were inline air-cooled engines projecting ahead of the fuselage nose. Tests indicated that the engines were inadequate and development had to wait for the arrival of more powerful motors. Eventually, the first flight test was made in September of 1937, indicating that Artist Jo Kotula made his cover painting from the prototype which had yet to fly by the issue date of June 1937. The intended armament of the H.220 comprised two forward-firing 20mm cannon and two aft-firing 7.5mm machine guns on a flexible mounting. No armament was ever fitted because the airplane was still underpowered. Photos of the Hanriot H.220 and H.230 (left) H.220 (right) H.230 Click to Enlarge beauty was only skin-deep. Filght tests revealed poor stability; this coupled with inadequate internal capacity and some lack of sturdiness dictated major redesign, resulting in the H.230, which had a modest success as a trainer. Basically, this was a gorgeous flop. Click Here for more information about the Hanriot H.220 and H.230. Click to go back and select another cover. | |||||||
