Veterans Day 2002 | |||||||
Hi Lindy
Hoppers!!! Fifth Year in a Row | |||||||
The Washington Veterans Committee is primarily concerned with bringing the history of World War II to the nation's classrooms. Veterans volunteer their time to give presentations at local schools to give a personal touch to the pages in history books. The organization holds an annual conference to bring together veterans from all over the country. This year, the program included a discussion of the Navajo Code Talkers, the battle for Iwo Jima, interrogation of Nazi prisoners and the Women's Air Service Program. The capstone of the meeting is the Swing Dance. This year marks the fifth occasion where the WVC has sought out DC Swing dancers to come in vintage uniforms and provide nostalgic color for the evening. Our own Rev. Arnold Taylor is one of the organizers of the dance, and it was just great to see him out in his own WWII uniform. The music was provided by the Difficult Run Jazz Band and the very lovely Christina Crerar thrilled everyone with her vocals A team of dancers spent every Tuesday for the past 8 weeks learning and perfecting a routine under the able direction of Ellen Engle and Marc Shepanek.
