Doc Scantlin's USO benefit

Doc's USO Benefit

About six months ago, American Express and US Airways had planned a gala party featuring Doc Scantlin and the Imperial Palms Orchestra. The events of September 11 forced cancellation of the event. The companies had paid Doc and, in a wonderful gesture, asked Doc to do a benefit for the USO. Completing the picture, the Watergate Hotel donated the space and the bar. Thus, 100% of the receipts for the evening --- about $2,000 went directly to the USO. We talked to Elaine Rodgers, chairwoman of the national USO, and she said that the money would go toward housing families of victims of the Pentagon disaster as they visit the DC area in matters related to their loss

This was a classic "Doc" event, down to the corny jokes, even the one about "Camel cigarettes as the official smoke of the Olympics..." For this event, a new wrinkle was added --- each set began with a patriotic number, beginning with The Star Spangled Banner, Chou Chou's stirring rendition of God Bless America, and a tribute to each of the services.

As the photos show, everyone had a great time re-creating the era and dancing the night away. Thanks to Doc, the Watergate, and American Express for letting us have a great Retro Time while supporting the USO
